Campaign to collect used batteries (18/04/2012)

With the distribution of containers is to raise awareness about the environmental impact and the consequences these could have on our health.

The Department of Environment and Society "Restart" have launched a campaign to collect used batteries from traders and local residents.

This initiative is to distribute containers of deposit in places frequented by the public with the aim of reducing the environmental impact that can produce the waste electrical and electronic equipment.

In a first phase, the council's Environment Fuente Alamo City Council has distributed 40 containers between schools, shops and public buildings.

The used batteries will be collected periodically by the contractor for recycling.

In the words of Councillor for the Environment, Bartholomew Rabal, this campaign aims to raise awareness about "the environmental damage created by the abandonment of batteries and the consequences that they could bring to our health", since according to statistics, a stack of mercury can contaminate 600,000 liters of water, an alkaline 167,000, while an oxide, 14,000 liters.

The organization "Greenpeace" says some of the components of which are manufactured batteries can be harmful to health, and therefore recommends an environmentally responsible consumption:

Deposit the batteries in suitable containers.

Opt for rechargeable batteries as they can replace disposable 300.

Uses and promotes products that work with rope, solar and electric power.

Do not buy cheap batteries: they last less and are more toxic.

Do not throw batteries away, the field or the street.

Never mix old and new batteries

Do not ever burn batteries because the vapors of heavy metals are carcinogenic and harmful to health.

Establishments wishing to have a collection container may apply to the council of Environment of the City of Fuente Alamo or phone: 968 598 026.
