Rehabilitated glass containers as shelter for street cats in Fuente Ãlamo (19/06/2018)

The initiative, a pioneer in the Region of Murcia, has been carried out by the children of the 4th year of Primary School of San Agustín School, in collaboration with the City Council and the Protector Rescate Peludos Amigos

Recycled glass containers will become homes where the Fuente Alamo street cats can find shelter, as well as water and food.

This initiative is born of the children of 4th grade of San Agustín school, who, moved by the need to solve the problem of these abandoned felines, proposed to carry out - together with the protective Rescate Amigos Peludos - this pioneering action in the Region of Murcia and that is already underway in other communities.

The presentation will be on Friday, at 11:00 am, at the San Agustín School of Fuente Álamo.

The initiative was born within the project "Design for Change", which consists of changing some aspect of our environment based on the ideas of the students, through five phases: feel, imagine, act, share and evaluate.

"In the 'feels' phase the children are aware of some problems around them and choose which one they would like to solve", explained Raquel Izquierdo, head of studies at the San Agustín School, and continued: "in the 'imagine' phase, they have to think about solutions on how they would solve the problem and draw up an action plan in the 'act' phase. "

Food containers, garbage and excrement in the parks, illnesses or fights late at night are some of the problems caused by the massive reproduction of these animals.

The students could know the situation of this species in the village thanks to the animal protector, who contacted the school to ask for collaboration.

In this sense, the City Council of Fuente Álamo also joined the proposal by giving some of the glass containers that are no longer used.

"In addition to providing a benefit for all the people, this initiative provides values, education and respect for animals and the environment, so we could not do more than give them the containers and support them in what they need," said Candela López , Councilor of Public Services.

The containers, rehabilitated by the children themselves, are already placed in three points of Fuente Álamo where the cat colonies are more numerous.

Here, the volunteers of the protector will go daily to leave them water and food.

In addition, cages will be enabled to castrate them and control reproduction.

The students are already organizing a market at the end-of-year party to sell items and collaborate financially with this small operation.

"Children are very excited about the initiative," said Izquierdo, who said that young people "have learned how animals contribute to society, have improved animal awareness and have known the work of animal protection."
